Story

Explore the Piave River with Houseboat Holidays Italia: from the history of the Great War, to the nature of the Sile Park, the beaches of Jesolo and Caorle, and the magic of Venice.

A journey back in time, on the waves of a deep history, through extraordinary landscapes. This is the adventure that Houseboat Holidays Italia offers in its exclusive itinerary on the Piave River.

Discovering the River of the Great War

The Piave River, often mentioned in history books and patriotic hymns, is a waterway that has much to tell. Some of the bloodiest battles of the First World War were fought on its banks, making it a symbol of resistance and courage.
But the Piave is not just a silent witness to the past. With its cool mountain waters, varied landscapes and biodiversity, it is a river that also represents the hydraulic genius of the Serenissima Republic, with its locks and movable bridges,
During the First World War, the Piave River was the scene of epic battles. Soldiers crossing its waters recounted how the river seemed at times a friend, offering refreshment and protection, and at other times an enemy, impetuous and ungovernable. Stories of heroism and sacrifice intertwine with local legends, creating a mosaic of narratives that make this river a place of collective memory.

An unforgettable holiday and easy navigation

Imagine waking up to the sound of flowing water, having breakfast with a panoramic view of the green banks and falling asleep under a starry sky, lulled by the gentle waves of the river.
Even if you have never driven a boat before, fear not. Our houseboats are easy to manoeuvre and navigation on the Piave River is made simple by the absence of obstacles and the large number of free and wide public moorings. In addition, the Houseboat Holidays Italia team offers comprehensive training before departure, guaranteeing a safe and relaxing holiday.

The Piave River intersects with the River Sile

Sile River Natural Park

Did you know that the course of the Piave River was once not where it is now? In fact, the River Sile, which today is navigable as far as Jesolo Lido, was once called the Old Piave. The Venetians, back in the 15th century, altered the morphology of the land to protect the Venetian lagoon from silting up, and literally moved the Piave and Sile rivers, changing their course. This nature reserve stretches for kilometres, offering spectacular views of river and land landscapes. With its well-maintained paths, surrounded by lush nature, it is the perfect place for lovers of trekking, birdwatching and photography. Its biodiversity is impressive: it is possible to spot numerous bird species on a single day's hike.

The marvellous Jesolo and Caorle

Not far from the banks of the Piave River lie two of Veneto's seaside pearls: Jesolo and Caorle. These destinations are more than just beaches: they are an ideal mix of relaxation, culture and fun. In Jesolo, after a morning in the sun, you can stroll along its famous pedestrian street, perhaps enjoying a homemade ice cream. Caorle, on the other hand, with its picturesque historic centre and fishing traditions, has a charm all of its own. Don't forget to visit the Caorle Cathedral and its rotunda by the sea. And, if you would like to learn more about the beauty and history of Caorle, please read our in-depth article here.

The magic of Venice

And after your exploration of Venice, return aboard your houseboat and let the sweet melody of the water lull you into a deep and restful sleep.

The Piave River, with its history, nature and attractions, is a hidden treasure just waiting to be discovered.
